You don't want that to support any weight Don. You just want it to dampen the spool a little when the lure hits the water. You got to use your thumb. Most guys will adjust that side knob so there is absolutely no tension against the spool at all. The better casters actually leave about 1/32 of play side to side in the spool for completely freespooling.
