if you got someone handy near ya, building one yourself i feel is always the best bang for your buck. You may pay a wee bit more but your are assured quality performing parts. Dell towers these days are throw aways after a few years. With one you built you can get more miles and upgrading is much easier. (and cheaper than replacing) in the long run.
only down side is if anything fails you have to deal with the OEM's instead of the dells/compaqs etc..
