BOSTON -- Three people were killed and two police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a gunmman opened fire at the Foxy Lady strip nightclub in New Bedford, then fatally shot himself.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the shooting took place after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Route 6 club. Several other people were wounded as well, according to New Bedford's mayor.

The gunman walked into the club in full body armor and opened fire. The two officers who were working details at the club responded and were wounded. Other police surrounded the club and before 6 a.m. they stormed the building. They reportedly found three people dead, one of them the gunman.

No identities have been released. New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang called it a "crime of passion." He said the gunman, who was not from New Bedford, was after a woman in the club. He had a high-powered rifle and a semi-automatic handgun and took hostages.

Witnesses said the gunman was a frequent customer who had been denied entry to the club.

The shooter was apparently dressed in military garb.

"He had a black suit on. He had a bullet-proof vest on with a hat ... he looked like a soldier," a cab driver who had been at the club said. "He's just a steady customer that was there and since they didn't let him in, he said he was going to do tragedy there, so that's what he did."

Police set up a command post at the scene and closed off a portion of Route 6 near the Fairhaven town border. New Bedford is a a town about 50 miles south of Boston near the Massachusetts-Rhode Island border known for its commercial fishing industry.

"If you're arguing with an idiot, make sure he isn't doing the same thing."
