I always heard that growing up as well... for freshwater fishing.
wind from the south, fish open your mouth
wind from the west, fishing's the best
wind from the east, fishing's the least
wind from the north, do not go forth
For freshwater bass fishing, it makes sense cause s-sw-w winds usually mean stable conditions.
n-ne-e winds usually bring a nasty cold fronts.
I never figured the saltwater fish would be as affected, but I have seen them shut down on cold fronts quite a bit this year. The folklore that fishing can be the best right before/during the early stages of a front/storm is definitely on.
When I look back and remember my best days, a good percentage of them involve really snotty conditions.
