Back from MV
Got back from Marthas Vineyard last night after two weeks+ of pretty good fishing.Plenty of Bass,Blues and Bonito still around as of today.
Before I got there everyone was saying the fishing was terrible. They were right.Took me an hour and half the first night out to catch the first bass.Usually takes about twenty minutes.Heh Heh heh.
Water temps still around 58 and the fish show no signs of moving on southward in any big hurry.Did not run into any large schools of Bass but every night was good for two to six, maybe eight good size fish.Plus all the bluefish you could want.
There was hardly anyone fishing since the derby ended so reports are sketchy or just plain non-existant.Had several good first light bites at Wasque for instance and not a soul in sight.During the week nights I bet there aren't ten guys out fishing on the whole island.Best fish caught while I was there was a 42 lber on an eel.Best fish i got was on plug at 25 lbs or so but I did lose a much larger fish fishing light tackle cause I wasn't payin attention. As did several other guys I know so at least I wasn't alone in that boat. Not much in the way of little schoolie bass around. Most the fish ran about 10 to 20 lbs.Don't think I saw a fish under 24" the whole time.
Guys bottom fishing Squid were kicking butt all along south beach daily although the bluefish tore'em up pretty good.Bring lots of dead Cephalapods. The eel business was brisk to say the least, and the rat blues got some good eating.Plugging/flies got tough the second week cause of that damn moon.Just too bright out!You really had to work hard and think about your tactics and where to go.No leaders and light line was important.Bites were before moon-up, overcast nights and after moonset.Even a snap could make a difference. If the moon was out forget it,waste of time.If you fished too heavy ....no hits ,not even bluefish.Which is tough if you hook a serious fish.(Bye Bye nice fish).
Probably ended up with about a 100 bass and and about the same in bluefish. It's not over yet there.Hell,it was still infested with little bluefish. There'll be some big bass to come through still I think. No schools, forget that, don't think it exists. But they're should be some big solitary fish still lingering around, working they're way down the coast.Meant to go to Nauset for a few days more just to see you guys than fish but I just ran out of time.
So how you guys makin out?anyone been gettin any?
Doesn't sound like anyone is hardly fishing over on the cape from what I read.Man If I lived up there I would be fishing real hard this next couple of weeks.Someone is gonna get a good fish
if they hang in there and don't quit.
