That 17.4 figure applies to the length of the navigation channel, including the 10 miles or so run out into Buzzards Bay, to Cleveland's Ledge Light. The land cut---from the end of the State pier at the Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay to the tip of the Scusset Breakwater--is 7.7 miles long.
