If you are using mono, the cost isn't that much of a concern when you buy a 1# bulk spool like Big Game or something. I usually get a 20# for the season and I keep a 15# and a 30# for 2 seasons. I change the line frequently whether I need it or not (after a half dozen times in saltewater & around rocks, it's best to change it anyway). Not worth worrying about the condition of your line when you are fighting the fish of the season or even better, the fish of a lifetime....
