My first rod was a 6' cheapo from Benny's. Used at the Canal for mackerel and flounder.
My first "sort of" surf rod was an 8' Berkley glass spinning rod. I guess that qualifies as a factory rod, too. It was many years before I bought another factory rod, and that was an 11' Penn Slammer.
First custom was a Lami 1163, wrapped conventional, and cut down to 11', built by Dave Hammock at Murat's.
