I have a couple ss camp-ons up near the boat and they are OK and come in handy. You should ALWAYS have a teather from the reel to the boat. The reason I like them is that for bottom fishing you can spread out the lines better. Also They double as a holder when casting up near the bow. I thought about cutting a hole in the gunnel and adding a couple more permennt holders but I didn't what to hack up the look of the nice wide gunnel. The in deck would be stronger no question but for flukin or drifting eels for bass it works great. (esp with baitrunner reels). Don't use them for trolling or anything that puts a hell of a load on it though.

BTW, if you look at the comm bass guys boats...they have a TON of clamp ons. The cast out eels in every directon and drift, fishing 8 or more rods.
