Vogt is dead-on on the color thing, as far as I'm concerned. Numbskull provided the killer lure list. A handful of lures in black, white, or yellow can work on most fish most of the time. Action and matching the hatch are key, but if there's too much bait around (I call it the Lotto syndrome), something radically different from the bait is needed. If you have an exact replica, it's competing with millions of the real thing. Size, action, or color that are very different from the bait may work in those conditions. Buy a handful of lures (Numbskull's list is something to shoot for, but you can get some cheaper plastic mixed in, also), and learn when and how to work them. But, one thing you should learn early: when it comes to fishing, avoid the words "always" and "never". The fish don't read the same books we do.
