I know someone who went a couple of weeks ago. Actually he is a student at Syracuse so he didn't have far to go. He hooked up with a friend of the Monomoy guide Randy Jones on a Friday and had a great time. They used fly rods specially rigged for the area. He said they don't use regular fly line but almost tie the flies direct to dacron like backing since the shale beats up regular fly lines when the fish bolt. He managed to hook a number of fish and landed a few nice ones. Caught both Salmon and steelhead. They had to wait in line at like five in the morning to get into the piece of river they fished and sounded like a mad dash to the pool to claim a spot too. A lot of rules and wardens are strict. If you see you have foul hooked the fish you got to break them off. Yes, he had mono on the end of the flyrod setups but not much else. No holding fish up for photos if you aren't planning on keeping them. Sounds like you should bring your thick skin if you don't like fishing in close quarters. If you don't you may be better off going to Alaska or Iceland. Yeah, I know maybe someday. I think randy jones has info on his website anyway www.yankeeangler.com you could also e-mail him with any questions you have.
