It was probably spring peepers, since crickets wouldn't be making any noise this time of year. (It's too early and too cold for them.)
The spring peepers are these little itty-bitty frogs that have a call that beats the band. The best way of describing it would be to ask if you ever saw an old Sci-fi movie call "Them!"
It's an old black and white horror movie about giant ants out in the Nevada desert.
The sound they used for the ants in the movie is almost identical to that of the spring peepers.
Depending on your location, you could also have some tree frogs, which are more like toads, and they also start their chorus in the spring.
