Not only do circle hooks minimize gut-hooking and killing short bass, but most fish are hooked in the corner of the mouth, making unhooking easier, and less likely for hook to come out.
Just remember to let the fish hook itself, and not try to cross its eyes with a hookset. That would pull the hook right out of the fish's mouth.
