Radios - FRS & GMRS - VHF

Long story, that I'll leave out the details on...

My brother in law works in electorics and he and I discussed my need for a back up radio, ideally with GPS. We looked online and saw the Garmin Rhino 530, it looked really slick. He said he'd see if he could get it from his distributor,. i told him let me see what i really need. A week or so later, I got a call that the 530 came in and he'd be shipping it to me (hes in CA). I didnt bother to tell him, I never said i wanted it, He got it for @ $150 less than most places were offering it and I figured I'd use it. So I sent him a check and he sent the 530.

The 530 has a GPS and a 2 way radio (FRS and GMRS) Its a VERY slick little device, BUT I thought 2 way radio meant VHF. Now, im not sure what the heck I would use it for , since my main goal was to call for help if needed on the water. GPS for location, radio for help. Are any of you familiar with FRS and GMRS - does the coast guard monitor these frequiencies? Is this thing any help to me at all other than GPS?
