Being good at BS'ing makes you a better fisherman. Sad but true.

Do you mostly fish sand or rocky coastline and why?
Combination of both but mostly rocky. When I fish sand like the cape it all looks the same to me but the main reason I fish rocks is that they are what is close to me.

What length rod do you prefer for the type of fishing you do and why?
10 foot because I do feel like it gives me a little more power and allows for further casts. I'll use a 9 foot rod when I don't think casting distance matters and I'm more concerned with control.

Do you prefer to roll your own rods, have them custom made or by ready made brands?
I buy custom usually but I'm not against ready made rods as long as they meet my needs. I'm hopelessly addicted to Lamiglass gsb series because they are not too moderate but are soft enough to throw an eel or work a pencil popper the way I like too.

What reel type and size, conventional or spinning?
I don't know if I'd still be fishing if I didn't have Van Staals. I've hacked up other reels pretty good from ware and tare, but mostly from just taking poor care of them. I prefer the vs250 but also use a vs200 and 150. I'm going to get a calcutta pretty soon and plan on learning to cast conventiol over the winter.

Do you prefer to throw bait (eels, chunks, liveys) or plug fish mostly?
I'm really into eels right now but I'd say I fish close to 50/50. Eels and plugs. I love needlefish. I'm a commercial label hound and I like Hab's and Afterhours.

What gear you feel essential, other than rod and reel, to be successful?
A good plug bag, well tied leaders, coastlock snaps, vmc hooks(trebles), live bait hooks for eels, braided line, skinz gloves, wet suit, waders and seperate wading boots, good surf belt w/ lanyard and pliers, water bottle holder, inexpensive head lamp and back up light on belt, grundens tops, one good dry top.

I'm into gear.

What time of year, for your locale has been the kindest to you in your search for the big one?

Different every year. Last year August was a wash for me. This year I had the best fishing I've ever had.

Do you feel satisfied upon the end of a nights struggle with whatever you take or do you feel only big bass caught make tyhe effort worth it?
I appreciate just being able to fish. I lost too really good fish one night this summer and I felt I really worked for them. Working through my plug rotation etc. and changing how I was fishing them. I ended up with a skunk but I've never been so fired up to fish again.

Do you ever think it's getting old and maybe it's time to find a new pastime?
If I did there would have to be something wrong with me. I'm only 29.
