Meh, if you can't get it going it might help. I've never personally used any lubricant but I guess it's not the worst idea in the world. Try doing it without the lubricant first. You'll just have a big mess.
The fire department in town uses our holes for their alarm cables and they always use lubricant. It makes a mess of the whole manhole. I bet they do it on purpose!
