Wear a full shield face protector.
I have been turning for about 5 years. I use AYC exclusively and have had 3 different pieces "blow up" on me. Doesn't happen often but all three times I had pieces of wooden shrapnel hit my face shield.
Cheap protection. I think I paid $30 at HD for it.
