Just hit the wire with a shot of WD40 from time to time. Wood will work fine if you are only doing a few from time to time. Just use a hardwood like maple. A 2x4 is pine, burns too easily.

I use hardwood, large finish nails for pins
They take 10 minutes and last for ten pours till they start getting lots of flash, in fact I think it takes longer to heat the lead than make the jig.
