What are you looking for? You can go lathe, beltsander, or hand carve. Most of us are using minilathes. If you are on a budget Grizzly makes a nice mini to start with. I have a Delta midi, others are using the Jet mini, or Full size. If you get a lathe get your self a good set of turning chisels. Woodworkers warehouse is a good place to go. The Delta midi, and Jet mini are both sold there and are around 300.00. They will also point you in the direction of a good set of chisels. You will also need a drill. You can use a corded or cordless hand held, or a drill press. Most of us through wire our plugs, for this you will need bradpoint bits. Woodworkers has a set of long bradpoints I think they are 12" long. I use a 3/16" bit, others use 1/8". With the 3/16" you will get less bent, broken, and wobbling bits. There is so much to it that it would be best to hook up with someone for a few hours to see what is needed, and how it is done.
