I flew to Miami last year. I sent a "bazooka" rod tube (just about 8') to my hotel UPS, and carried on a 3 piece travel rod.
I'm flying to St Kitts Saturday. I was able to fit 3 travel rods into one tube (carrying on) and I'm going to pack my reels and tackle in my suitcase.
I highly reccomend UPS (with insurance). I would also suggest trying to minimize how much gear you bring.
