Could be the egg was somewhere in the pump and the conditions were right for it to hatch.
I put in an asparagus bed in many years ago and suddenly had an Asparagus Beetle outbreak with not another bed for miles around.
What????, they just flew over saw it and landed.
County Ag specialist said the eggs were prolly already on the roots when i planted.
