I borrowed a friend's once and after that I "had to have" my own. I got most of the parts on Ebay on the cheap. Van gave me a lead on the coupling. He blazed the power grinder sb trail. I used it a bunch last year and it works very well. I need to add a hopper and a reverse switch for emergencies.
If I had to make a lot of chum I would use a wood chipper. What I have meets my needs. I don't make *that* much chum however and this grinder more than meets my needs.
Last fall I had a lot of green crabs and ground them up and froze them into a large solid brick and used it in a chum pot for tog fishing. It was fun feeding the crabs into machine...my kids made a game of it. It worked OK and got the bite started quickly but "melted" pretty fast. Not like fish chum that lasts a good part of the tide. The serious sharking crowd have these mounted in a rod holder and empties directly overboard.
One thing is keep an eye on safety, this thing could inflect serious physical damage to the user if you get hung up in the advancing screw.
Make one over the winter, its pretty easy.
