I can only speak from my experiences with Ubuntu.I've never had any major issues with it and having been using the last three releases and have found each newer release to have been an improvement over the prior. What issues I've had have been resolved by asking Qs in the support forums.
If you browse those forums you'll definitely find people who've found it to be a nightmare,it seems to react to different brands of PCs differently.
The best way to try it is to request a CD and run it "live" from the disc, its never installed but you get use the full OS.
If you decide to install and you find that its just not working you can run the live CD and use the partition editor to remove the partition with Ubuntu on it and you should be back where you started.
