If you go on without a permit you will eventually get caught.

The permits expire on like the 4th of July so be careful . One year my friend had a permit he bought in the early spring and then in the fall he was pulled over because it expired. Its not for the whole spring to fall season. its from july 4th to july 4th.
While they do not inspect the rquired equipment when you obtian the permit , you would have to be a fool to go out there without it.

The Charlestown police used to have a big Suburban they patrolled the beach with. The cop was a heck of a nice guy who we would see fishing at night. he would very friendly tell you that at 8 AM he was coming back in uniform in his war wagon and then he would not be so nice .

the permit is worth it because you can access the west side of charlestown breachway and many holes and structures along the beach in front of Ninigret Park. You can also stay all night and have coffee in the morning etc if you load up with a stove , etc.

i always thought the permit was worth it. even if you only use it a few times , its fun to drive on the beach.

Do airdown to 16 to 18 pounds or you will get stuck. I have pulled many guys out of holes they dug for themselves with soinning wheels at road pressures of 35 pounds , etc. I don't care if you are the best driver in the world , you will get stuck if you don't airdown and you will probably get stuck right in the middle of the cut through to the beach and block everyones access.

Find out who is going out on the beach with tow trucks. It will cost you a fortune if you have to get towned and pay but it may also save your vehicle from a rising tide so do get a number for whoever is willing to go out there with a tow truck. burlingame used to have the number of a guy who would tow you off the beach.

Although not shown on the lists above , you should carry a cell phone and always have jumper cables in your vehicle. Even better than jumpers is a well charged emergency starter device . sears sells them.
