chef hit it on the head. The more exercise the dog gets, the more time it can spend alone. Big dogs need at least 20 minutes of full speed running every day. I have a boxer and I run the dog mornings before work on the bike (weather permitting). Then I leave for work, but by that time the dog is lying down broad side tongue rolled out over the floor panting. At that point she could care less whether she's alone or not. The separation anxiety thing is something they don't completely outgrow but it mellows with age.
