Jack Bruce was always a favorite, classically trained with a jazz background - a good Letterman clip of Jack with some tasty bass riffs with Ginger Baker on drums:

A younger Jack Bruce and Clapton - Cream in their prime, '68 - dude, that was 40 years ago....
