The card goes in that green slot at the bottom of the board (the top most green slot in your second picture). Those slots next to the RAM are only if you wanted to add more RAM.
I would try to borrow one from another PC. I'd hate for you to buy one, just to find out it doesn't resolve the problem. Now I'm kicking myself in the ass for getting rid of my old graphics card as I'm just on the other side of the MA/RI line from you.
