October of last year, I took my son Sean and his cousin Joey both are 9, out for their first surf fishing trip to Charlestown Beach. We hit the beach just before false dawn and the tide was just at the high mark. The water was perfect for them, waves 2-3' rolling in and it was going to be an overcast day.
Since the boys lack the skill & power for distance, I began to cast for them. I would make the cast hand the rod off and they would take turns working the lure back to the beach. The lure of choice was a red/white ranger 1.5 - 2 oz. I picked this lure because its a simple lure for them to work, you can cover a lot of water with it, a single hook and you don't have to worry about snagging the bottom.
That morning we landed 7 blue fish, all on the small side. However, what was most important was that tug on the other end of line and big smiles to match.
