Good luck with the shoulder.
Stay away from poplar, it tends to rot quickly in the presence of water. Birch or maple is good if sealed properly for darters, needles, poppers. For swimmers you want lighter woods like Alaskan yellow cedar,Port Orford cedar, Red western cedar. AYC is the heaviest of the threee with red being the lightest. I use alot of AYC even for poppers and large needles.
