Agree with TDF –

Keep the drag set normally and apply thumb pressure to stop the fish. Depending on the situation especially fishing bridge pilings or other heavy structure you sometimes have to keep them from taking any line and it becomes a tug of war that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Heavy gear is a must and I think single hooks are less likely to pull free or bend under the pressure so I pretty much stick to Eels, Bucktails or big swim shads.

I go back and forth on mono vs braid in this kind of situation and am currently back to favoring braid for the feel .
