Plus, I am higher up than in the surf so with a fish on, the line is not dragging so much over rocks due to the angle, thus a shorter leader works out fine

Exactly why I had concerns of 5-6' leader. The T-top is great most of the time, but fly fishing has become near impossible with 2 people and some angles.
I also thought about the higher angle and thought I'd start with a 2.5' leader.
