Fishing Piers can be profitable, tourist-attracting enterprises. North Carolina and Florida have some good ones that are well run – but the state of RI can’t seem to find success where other states have.
Rather than fishing license, I’d prefer that the pier be privatized and a concession sold for small bait shop on it, or nearby. Dedicated monies end up in the general fund the first time there is a shortfall – if you don’t believe me just ask Mr. Romney. If you charge a fee to either access the pier or park – you will keep out the worst element.
Local residents are among the most hostile towards public access and no doubt will use what happened on the pier before, with the littering, etc, as the ammo to shoot down any proposal. One wonders if they allowed that to happen early on in order to provide that excuse? At any rate, regardless of what is said today, I’d be very surprised if a fishing pier ever becomes a reality.
