I can easily hid my IP (Simple proxy server solves all that), mac addresses aren't really useful to track as you can change them quite easily. I'll spoof my mac address at hotels in order to use two computers on the same internet connection - register with one, and then spoof the other.
Many of these cases occur through the use of hijacked PCs as proxies. Computer gets a trojan, and the scammers then proxy to that IP address for their illegal activities, screwing over 2 people at the same time in process.
I'm sorry that happened to you Van. Seems as though something like this will eventually happen to anyone that has widespread use of a credit card. Because I use my CC for just about all my purchases, I have seriously been considering looking into a credit protection company along the lines of LifeLock.
