Sad news indeed. A few years back Al contacted me because of my interest in needlefish plug history. Al wanted me to be aware of some of his knowledge and gave me some historic insight into needlefish history that he knew. We became friends through email and a few phone calls. I finally had the opportunity to meet him when my daughter played in a travel team softball tournament on Long Island. I told him I'd be at a particular field on a Friday evening. As I was watching a game a few other parents told me that an older gent was walking through the stands looking for someone named Dennis. I went over and introduced myself and it was like we knew each other forever. We sat down together and watched two games in a light rain. The whole time we talked about surf fishing for striped bass. As we spoke I could see the twinkle in his eyes and knew he loved this pastime as much as I. His eyes turned sad as he related that his health wasn't the greatest and how tough it was for him to find local areas to fish that had convenient parking so he didn't have to walk far. I really felt bad for him as I could envision that happening to myself as I get older. After the game we shook hands and promised to keep in touch. I never did meet him again but over the years we traded secrets and insights as only dyed in the wool surfcasters can. I feel so fortunate to have met Al Bentsen - I'm going to miss him.
