Papi's under contract until the end of next season--what move do you propose there? Releasing him and eating his $13 million salary?
Or do you think that some other team will give you more than a case of Rawlings baseballs for him in a trade?
Face it--he's washed up and you're stuck with him.
You're also stuck paying Varitek $3 million next season, whether he plays or not.
