I am no electrician but there is a huge difference from 120 and 230.

electric dryers , your electric stove and some large air conditioners like thru the wall type run on 220/240 volt. The plug is a different configuration. It has to be a double pole breaker in the main box.

Frank is it a new fan or an old one, can you find out how many amps it draws?
