BP - Bungling Petroleum

The news on the oil spill is disturbing to say the least - and the long term effects could be worse still

Brings back memories of when I was a kid back in the '50's and a tanker - the PW Thirtle - was rammed and dumped 31,000 gallons of crude into Narragansett Bay

I remember the effects well - thick tar all over the beaches and rocks, crude floating in Newport harbor making the beach at King's Park look somebody had paved it, plenty of dead oil-soaked critters

One of the lifeguards at King's Park actually set the floating crude on fire, thinking it would get rid of it - that didn't go so well, either. I can't believe BP actually thought that might be an effective mitigation technique for an offshore spill...

The spill from the Thirtle effectively wiped out the oyster fishery in Narragansett Bay - those folks in the Gulf states are gonna get hammered, doesn't look like I'll be eating Appalachacolas anytime soon

At this point I hope the offshore spill in Louisiana doesn't get into the Stream and round the Keys - it's not a pretty scenario

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.
