Mike, interesting article and worth the read.

The joint patrol was conducted in response to a complaint from the fishing industry of illegally set gillnets near Block Island. The Tiger Jo was cited with fishing with an illegally marked gillnet in violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA); the gill net did not have appropriate “pinger” detectors affixed to it.

The MMPA requires that gillnets be equipped with pinger detectors to protect marine mammals from becoming entangled in this type of fishing gear. A pinger emits a high frequency pitch to deter marine mammals from fishing nets.
