They are still made of wood.....they are made by charring wood chips/sawdust and then compressing them...add in a little coal and you are good to go.

I've used the Cowboy charcoal.....Great for Steaks and Burgers....got a real high heat but burned out way to fast for DO or smoker use.

I smoked some ribs for 6 hours last weekend w/ the Sams charcoal...only had to replenish once.

have used it a couple of times w/ the DO and was very happy w/ it
