When I do wear my wader boots in the sand I will get SOME sand in them but not much. My beans have a clip that secures the bottom of the wader to the boot. I'd say most of the sand that gets in is from the wash. I don't have a problem. My wader boots are felt bottomed but they sell the studs that can be easily attached. Most of my wear and tear is in the knees, but like I said I am on my 3rd free pair. Choosing waders is a personal choice and it took me a few years before I settled on these and I love them. One thing about them is that they do change models and they do upgrade. The pair I have now is better than the ones I started with and they were only $10 more. So in other words I paid $10 for my newest waders.
