Larry, mortar should be somewhat dry. At least not wet like cement. Otherwise you will have to wait for hours to point your joints. Do you have the premixed with sand, or do you have to add sand to it? It is available both ways. I hope you are using aluminum ties every couple of courses to hold it up to the wall you are bricking to.... saw a guy cutting up beer cans as he finished them to make the ties.... And wet the bricks before setting them so they don't suck the water out of the mortar before it cures .Let's see soom in progress pics. Have fun.
