When I use to surf fish I would rig my pole with 17 or 20# test then I would add a piece of Flour. 50# about 10 feet then a swivel with 50# and fish finder and a 6/0 or 7/0 Gamey octopus.
This way I could cast hard without breaking the bait off and still have a light line for distance. Use to work ok for me.
