Glad you are OK - at speeds like that it could have been much worse. I agree the invincibility theories of 4WD are crazy. As a follow up - that tube sand works great, heavy and compact just make sure to get bags with no holes. I keep a few bags in the back of my 01 cherokee. It has 4WD, but still isnt very heavy so it really is not a great bad weather car. It is great offroad, getting through and up and over things, steering in bad conditions not so much. I agree with an earlier quote that sometimes it just makes sense to stay home unless completely necessary.
Road conditions are not consistent, all it takes is a bridge or a pothole or wehatever to form one icey spot and your done. I got in an accident 10 years ago on an icy night heading to my wife's (then she was my GF) on basically a late night rendevous and paid the price when I was totaled by a wagon with AWD that lost control around an icy curve. Very scary and expensive, since it was an old car with no collision, and taught me a lesson.
Again, just be glad you are ok...
