Martin Burns WMA

Please read the attached information and attend the hearing on January 19 if you are able.

Thanks,
Stephen

Dear Hunters and Conservationists,

I am writing to alert you to a variance being requested at the January 19, public hearing of the Newbury Planning Board in the Town Hall (see attached notice) which may affect hunting in Martin Burns Wildlife Management Area. I urge you to attend and voice your concerns. You may attend whether or not you live in Newbury, because that would illustrate that granting the proposed waiver has an effect that extends beyond the community because Martin Burns is public land.

This is the situation: The proposed development is across the street from the State Police Barracks on Scotland Road. It backs up to the Martin Burns WMA. The parcel has many constraints - it is located in an Outstanding Resource Water (ORW) area which means it drains to the Artichoke reservoir, a public water supply plus wetlands issues. Because of this the developer is requesting a variance for a longer cul-de-sac road than the regulations currently allow. This will allow him to site the houses at the back of the parcel against the Martin Burns WMA property line. This means the 500 foot setback from houses will affect hunting in Martin Burns along that property line.

This land belongs to the Public, and I do not think a waiver should be granted that compromises one of the Public purposes for which Martin Burns was established and people outside the community. Additionally, we do not need to have hunting area diminished. To that end I am hoping to encourage hunters and conservation minded people to attend this hearing.

As the president of a local watershed nonprofit, I am personally interested in preserving open space such as Martin Burns, and habitat in the Parker River watershed. But I also support hunting, as my two sons who grew up in Newbury but now live in Wisconsin and Nevada are active hunters, and would want me to support the local hunting community.

Please pass this message along to anyone who might be interested. I obtained my email addresses from the GOAL list of clubs and may have missed some who would be interested. Email or call if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Marlene Schroeder
