you'll need a long distance lens
find their drumming tree
and get set up with your tripod
then wait for them ,
you can even make MOCK drumming calls
just google that wood pecker's sounds (mp3)
and then arrange a speaker out the window
to draw them to their special tree.

Yeah Swimmer, i tried for over a year
to see one up close...then as i was leaving the old
place one uncharacteristically flew real close
to my head on his way to the swamp across the street.
i couldn't believe how big it was.
