If you are getting short hits it means you are in the right zone, I like to troll very slow, about 1.5-2.5 mph. I love a tube with a spinner blade on it because 1) I think it attracks the fish and 2) you can get a good "feel" for what the tube is doing on the end of the line, meaning you can tell if it's weeded up or just not spinning properly.

I like a nice slow corkscrew action to the tube as it trolls. Try to keep it right off the bottom.

Hooking through the head is the way to go, I like to stick the point of the hook right between the pinchers. That is the best way to keep the worm on the hook IMO and you get the best action that way as well.

Oh and you might want to experiment with different weights and types of tubes, sometimes I'll be getting short hits, switch tubes and get slammed...
