I always keep the fish 15-20' behind me on a tether, which was suggested to me by a friend who does a lot of diving.

If a toothy critter goes for something it will likely be the fish before your leg, just make sure the fish are well away from you and chances of survival will be much better...

It's not the bait
At the end of your line
It's the fishing hole
Where all the fish is blind
