the ferrule area absorbs more energy then a one piece blank. Micro stress cracks may have been a contributing factor that developed over time causing a failure.
If course design is a factor where one manufactures two pieces are better then others.
An analogy would be a large standing wave in deep water coming towards shore then suddenly breaking due to a shallow bottom. The energy of the crashing wave is focused on that area like that of the ferrule as oppose to the wave gliding in as in a one piece rod.
