What some bait dealers sell as "sea clams" are actually just the jumbo-sized chowder 'hogs that the NY/NJ guys call skimmer clams. They sell them fresh, in 50 lb. burlap sacks. Those are the ones to use for bait, if you can get them. Fresh, true sea clams are almost as delectable as scallops. I think they're probably more closely related to scallops or steamers than to quahogs. |
"skimmer clams" are ocean sea clams, not quahogs at all. They come in two varieties, one sold as bait clams come from polutted waters those sold as "food qulaity" come from unpolutted waters. Sea clams or skimmer clams are much better bait than any size quahoig.
