Sharpening my leaders and tying my hooks.

For you small business owners and personal computer users - makes sure you have data backups going.

If you use online backup verify that your backups are complete.

If you use tape/other media make sure you have copies of your backup information in multiple locations.

I sent this info out to some of my clients yesterday and this morning.

Quote:
Our clients under contract will automatically have the following completed as part of our services but I want to extend these recommendations to you as well. If you have any questions or wish **** to perform this work, please contact me today via phone or email.

With the likelihood increasing of a Category 1 or 2 hurricane Irene reaching our shores sometime late Sunday or early Monday morning, **** is getting in touch with you now in order to provide steps and recommendations for preparing your technical infrastructure. These plans may not need to be implemented if the storm moves far enough east of current computer models. Operations in the northeast quadrant of the storm, especially if the storm tracks west, may expect even harsher conditions (as of 8am Thursday, storm track is more west).

Recommendations:

Backups:
We want to confirm quality backup and offsite retention of data. **** will inspect backup jobs but in some cases (tape backup systems) clients will be responsible for taking adequate tape backup offsite. Most on-premise safes are not sufficient to protect data in these conditions.

Tape clients:
* **** will confirm proper backups.
* Client to confirm that copies of latest Thursday (tomorrow night’s backup) recent full backup is taken offsite by primary onsite liaison (or designate).
* Client to confirm that copies of latest Wednesday (tonight’s backup) recent full backup is taken offsite by secondary onsite liaison (or designate). This is to provide redundancy in offsite backup. Friday backup will remain local to facility.

DATTO / Internet based backup:
* **** will double-check proper backup completions and offsite replication. We know these are operating correctly for our monitored systems but one can never check too often.

Computer Equipment:

Servers:
* Should the storm track maintains present course, **** will remotely bring down servers on early Sunday morning / afternoon by remotely powering the servers OFF.
* Please work with your **** account technician to discuss a primary and alternate employee to restart servers on Monday morning. We may be reacting to damage with other clients or our own properties and may not be available to simply turn equipment on.

Desktops:

* Please have all desktops and monitors powered OFF by end of business Friday (or Saturday for those operations open) other than crucial desktops needed for a specific function.
* Any crucial desktops should have an arrangement made with your **** account technician to complete a manual shutdown.

Network:
* Please leave all network equipment on as access to the network will be necessary from **** remote access.

Network Storage Devices:
* For clients with Network Storage devices such as DATTO and NAS network drives, please ensure these devices remain operating.

Facilities:

Facility:
* If you have concerns on the locations of your servers / critical equipment being susceptible to storm damage, please contact us as soon as possible.

Any special concerns or questions should be brought up with **** staff on Thursday or Friday morning if at all possible.

Thank you,

John Redmond
